Shamakhi is an ancient Azerbaijani city that originated in the 5th century. BC er In the IX — XVI centuries. – The capital of the Shirvan kingdom, the residence of the Shirvanshahs – one of the most beautiful cities in the East. From the middle of the XVIII century – the center of the Shemakhan Khanate. For a long time, Shemakha was one of the most important points throughout the Great Silk Road. Here was located one of the centers of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school and the school of decorative and applied art (carpet-making) and miniature.

Shamakhi is an excellent place not only to get acquainted with the history and culture of Azerbaijan but also to have a great rest among the majestic mountain ranges and green meadows.

1. Maraza Village

In the village of Maraza near Shamakhi there is a two-story mausoleum built at the very beginning of the 1400s. From the first days of its existence, people believe that the holy man is buried in this place. There are always pilgrims here who wish to pray near the body of the saint and tourists who came just out of curiosity.

2. Juma Mosque 

Juma mosque in Shamakhi is unique, and it has no analogs in Azerbaijan. The huge prayer hall of the mosque is divided into three independent parts, connected by wide open apertures. Each piece has a separate mihrab and entrance. But the mosque was destroyed by wars and earthquakes, and it was rebuilt and rebuilt more than once. The mosque received a modern look in the 20th century. The destroyed mosque was practically rebuilt on the old foundation. During the reconstruction of the mosque its architecture was preserved, it also has three halls, the central building is blocked by a vast dome, and two side rooms are smaller. Under the central dome is a belt of windows decorated with openwork grilles. The facade of the mosque, as before, is decorated with a decorative ornament. Founded more than 1200 years ago, the Shamakhi Juma Mosque remains one of the most significant and most beautiful religious buildings of the Caucasus.

3. Silent Lake 

After lunch, we will go to Silent Lake to enjoy the beauty and peace. Let’s walk, maybe fish catch for dinner. Even by the lake you can sing songs üith the guitar and have an emotional conversation.

4. Sis Village

-The village of Sis in recent years, has become one of the most popular places. This village with its clean, dry air, beautiful nature, many orchards is beautiful for tourists. The name of the tree was because it is continuously covered with fog.

5. Shamakhi Observatory

Located 22 km. from the district center, on the left side of the Pirgulu mountain, at an altitude of 1,435 meters above sea level. This science center opened in 1960. In 1981, the observatory was named after Mohammed Nasreddin Tusi. One of the necessary conditions for the construction of the observatory was the presence of a large number of clear nights in the year.  After four years of research by a group of scientists headed by academician Yusif Mammadaliyev, it was decided that Pirgulu is the ideal place for the observatory. The observatory has the largest telescope in the USSR. The diameter of the mirror is 2 meters — equipment brought from Germany.
